To accommodate for the patching, the actual bullet diameter is under .458, and varies somewhat depending on bullet weight, etc. Bullet weights vary from 450-550 grains. I owned at one time a percussion rifle built for such bullets.Figure out the width of the spring steel you will cut from the paper binder, use a wood chisel and chisel a spot for the new cut spring to lay. Cut the spring, drill a hole in it for a small nail to secure it in place. I used a small brass nail, cut to length so it would not protrude into ramrod hole.Stabbed in that outline, back cut all the edges, gouged out the middle of the mortice and then flattened the bottom and cleaned up the mortice. The side plate went right in. I think it took me 20 minutes to outline the plate and cut the mortice. I find it deadly at 50 yards or so, with its zero at 75 yards, my personal maximum maximum range with it. Powder charge max for me is 70 grains of 3F. In my gun.get my patch material from JoAnne's Fabric Store. I wash and dry it first then fold several layers (5-6) of fabric slightly wider than the patch I want and use a sharpened hole saw in my drill press to cut the patches. In an hour I can make patches for all my BP guns to last me a year or more of shooting. F.JB may be too fine, depending on how rough the bore actually is. 320 grit Clover compound is good as is fine valve grinding compound. If the bore shows reamer marks across the rifling that may be the problem. If it's smooth then it's something else wrong, like the lube. As mentioned, check the patches for being cut.Investarms Hawkens are great rifles, well built and accurate. My first muzzleloader ever (bought in 1977) was a Charles Daly (Investarms) .54 Hawken, still have it, still shoots great. Added several more since then, never have had a problem or breakage. Most frizzens today are made of 6150 steel which is an oil hardening steel, however it will never get hard enough with an oil quench, so you need to use water. Make it more uniform front to back using the flash hole location as a guide. In the process, you can grind out the notch as well. Our ML club has a barrel dating to the Civil War era that has been re-breeched, re-stocked, and rifling re-cut many times. All the flats have multiple dovetails on them as it's had under lugs and sights at every position possible.Obsidian is a volcanic glass. It tends to shatter like glass. While flint, agate, etc are 7 on Moh's hardness scale, obsidian is only 5. BTW stainless steel is also around 5 on the same scale. A good frizzen may actually be harder than obsidian. When I was studying this, we used a stainless steel watch back to test this.Weighs just over 8lbs, so it's quite handy for a double barrel gun. Barrel swivel detents are nice and solid. Seems in decent shape overall. These are fairly uncommon so if you're thinking about playing with a swivel breech this is about as affordable as it gets. $550 Shipping Included.
